40. Mary said, “A tree has life in it because of the sap, and we have life in us because of the chrism. Unless one has the chrism, one is not Christian but steals the name. Be certain you do not steal.”

If someone goes down into the water and comes up without having receiving anything, and says, "I'm a Christian," they've borrowed the name at interest.

Saturninus or Satornilus (active 100–120 AD) was an early Gnostic Christian from the 1st century Simonian school. He is quoted in the works of Irenaeus.[1]

Acts 11:26

And when he had found him, he brought him unto Antioch. And it came to pass, that a whole year they assembled themselves with the church, and taught much people. And the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch.

Satornilos of Syria was an ascetic who also taught at Antioch in the early 2nd century. Cerinthus (mid-1st century) from Asia Minor, taught ideas about the Unknown God and the overshadowing of Jesus by the Christ. Carpocrates (c. AD 117-138) headed a Gnostic school in Alexandria, and Marcellina, a female disciple, spread his teaching to Rome about AD 160. These were the early teachers, of whom little is known. More can be said about the three giants of Gnosticism – Basilides, Marcion and Valentinus1.

The Syrian Gnostic Schools drew from heavily from Judaic teaching and thought, as well as that of Platonic school. Their foundations appear to have emanated from the city of Antioch. The surviving teachings suggest that the creation occurred in a series of stages, with the final creation being that of a universe comprising of matter.

52Going Down into the Water Anyone who goes down into the water and comes up without receiving anything and says, “I am a Christian,” has borrowed the name. But one who receives the holy spirit has the name as a gift. A gift does not have to be paid back, but what is borrowed must be paid. This is how it is with us, when one of us experiences a mystery.

60. Those who receive the name of the father, son, and holy spirit and have accepted them must do this. If someone does not accept them, the name will also be taken from that person. A person receives them in the chrism with the oil of the power of the cross. The apostles called this power the right and the left. This person is no longer a Christian but is Christ.

84Chrism Is Superior to Baptism Chrism is superior to baptism. We are called Christians from the word “chrism,” not from the word “baptism.” Christ also has his name from chrism, for the father anointed the son, the son anointed the apostles, and the apostles anointed us. Whoever is anointed has everything: resurrection, light, cross, holy spirit. The father gave all this to the person in the bridal chamber, and the person accepted it. The father was in the son and the son was in the father. This is heaven’s kingdom.

88 No Jews…from Greeks…from Jews…to Christians.
